Likeable characters, interesting story and very good background information. Gentle detective story with believeable characters and plot. Less gritty and violent than a lot of detective novels that I read but I enjoyed reading this book.

The Body in the Dales A Yorkshire Murder Mystery Book 1 eBook J R Ellis Reviews

Excellent police procedural. Small town setting. Interesting characters. Well told. I will definitely read more books in this series and by this author.
This appears to be a run of the mill murder mystery , which it is of course .What raises it above the average is that as the sleuthing process introduces us into the lives of many "ordinary" people , their motivation and disturbing "ordinary" village .
Spectacular descriptions of the Dales and hair raising caving adventures add up to a very satisfying experience.
The few strong points about this mystery are that it is set in Yorkshire, and the geography is interesting and a significant part of the plot. This British police procedural begins with the discovery of a body deep in a pothole (cave). The victim is a cad so suspects abound. The situation seems impossible first, because the victim was not murdered in the cave, and second, because the body appeared unexpectedly several days after the murder. This book is the first in a series so the author must establish the setting, introduce the continuing characters, and tell a good story so that the reader will want to continue with the series. This book left me cold on each of those elements. The writing is awkward at times, in both the narrative and the dialog. The dialog, especially, never rang true. The book is also burdened with a long cast of characters, most of which are mere outlines. After a while, the list just blurred and it was not worth the trouble to keep them straight. Even some of the continuing characters are very thin and not believable. The best series are ones where you can care about the continuing characters or at least believe them. I love British mysteries so I had high hopes for finding another series to enjoy. Perhaps I am spoiled by the excellent mysteries by Anne Cleeves (Shetland Islands and Vera Stanhope series), Elly Griffiths (Ruth Galloway series), Peter Lovesey (Peter Diamond series), Elizabeth George (Inspector Lyndsey series), Deborah Crombie (Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James, and Cynthia Harrod-Eagles (Bill Slider series). There are plenty of other British mystery series that don’t meet those standards, but still are better than this book, such as the Cooper and Fry mysteries by Stephen Booth (set in the Peaks District) and the Lake District Murders by Martin Edwards. There are murders, but they are not described in gruesome detail. There is sex, but it is also not described in detail. There is romance, but it is not romantic. Rough language is present, but not extensive. Perhaps the series improves with the writer’s experience, but it is highly unlikely that I will read any of the other books.
This was the first of the series. You should read this first. It is really quite good. Author is great at including you in the scenery.
Enjoyed the book, especially the scenery, being a great fan of the Yorkshire dales. I am looking forward to the next one, which is on my reading list.
Cops in the Yorkshire Dales and bodies in caves. What's not to enjoy? Although Dr. Herriot isn't here, if you're a fan or just love the Dales as he did, you'll sense him over your shoulder.
This thriller had a lot of twists to the story. I thought the region and explanation of where this mystery unfolds unusual. It depicts the the effects of how the first murder, and then the second, affects a small town. It also, gives an insight of how the various law enforcement characters go about investigating the murders in such an unusual place. Worth the READ!
Likeable characters, interesting story and very good background information. Gentle detective story with believeable characters and plot. Less gritty and violent than a lot of detective novels that I read but I enjoyed reading this book.
