You know how sometimes you need a break from George RR Martinesque darkness? You know how sometimes you want to curl up and immerse yourself in a book that brings you back to the simple joy of reading a good story? That's what this story of Oliver did for me. It's written for a younger audience that McGhee's other works. Maybe not even younger, just broader. Just because a story is about a kid doesn't mean the story is only for kids. I found the author's sense of humor somewhat similar to Douglas Adams.

Oliver is a kid who drives his dad crazy. He's always breaking things, losing things and imagining things. Dad is completely disengaged, maybe even a bit of a jerk. His attitude becomes understandable as the story progresses. You see, Dad is worried about Oliver; he has memories of his own that interfere with the relationship with his son. this could have
In the meantime, the reader gets to visit other storylines that seem to happening simultaneously as Oliver's adventure. These other characters are my favorites! One Bottle Bob the pirate, the Flamelord, Rood-Pu and many others. This is a book with a lot of excellent co-stars, even a grumpy cat named Leviathan.

All in all this is a really nice read! This book is a keep and I will definitely read again!
I found some homages to both Stephen King and to Sesame Street. That's something you don't see every often. This story is much more fun that McGhee's other books and I found it surprising coming from him but delightful!

I wish I had an audience; I would love to read this one out loud!

Old Flames and Heroes Mord McGhee Loren Coleman Books Reviews

Great book. Keep in up Mord.
Old Flames and Heroes isn’t so much of a novel to be read as much as one to be read aloud - to children, for the emphasis and a good deal of the silliness would be especially appreciated by younger listeners. Naturally, an adult would enjoy the book too, but why deprive any child of the pleasure of pirates, lake monsters, and a little blue sun?
Scenes with varying characters from Rood Po to Arch-Bogimaen and the Flamelord follow one another helter-skelter, so the novel includes a narrator (Teller of the tale) who puts everything into perspective.
While reading aloud, be prepared to follow the boldface shouting and yelling, and you may just want to include hand waving as well. A drum or any percussion instrument would add to the festivities, and it is a festive novel.
I got Mord's book at Horror Realm Con in Greentree, Pittsburgh PA. It was a pleasure meeting Mord and his wife and artist daughter at their table. I totally look forward to this con every year because they have such a high quality of vendors and authors and Mord is one of them. His books are always a good read and I'm glad to add this one to my collection. I'm drawn to swashbuckling tales of all kinds and 'Old Flames and Heroes' is a really fun adventure tale and ghost story. The writing is crisp and literary. Mr. McGhee writes well and takes us along for one zip of a ride. He makes the undead seem creepy and somehow beautiful, figures to haunt our dreams. Buy this now!

Luck, love, and lake monsters play a major role in this adventurous novel which draws in readers as they relate to Oliver.

“Oliver is the most famous boy at Belray Elementary in Bentwood, Pennsylvania.”

He rescued Buddy, the firehouse dog who had fallen through the thin ice, thus becoming a hero.

A little blue sun appears in the sky. Its meaning and its repercussions play an important role in the story.

“It was the sort of magic that followed Oliver around… Oliver doesn’t always understand what he sees and hears, but he has a unique way of pulling it together into his own terms.”

Young readers will enjoy this tale that brims with imagination, transcending the real world in ways only an eleven-year-old can phantom.
Excellent book!
