I had such fun reading this book. I picked it up, and was, honestly, a little put off by the vocabulary in the first bit, but, like coffee, it began working on me to pick it back up and read more. Before I knew it, I was thoroughly enjoying the characters and the plot and the authors amazing imagination! I often read my children's young adult books with them. Series like Eragon and Lord of the Rings and I found myself thinking of the Valley of Fire as a sort of grown up version of good brain candy. It was loads of fun! I was on the edge of my seat, and I can't wait to jump into the next book. A real vacation in kindle form! Excellent! I also expect to see it on the ACLU's banned books lists as soon as certain sorts of unimaginative folks read bits and become outraged about the critical view of many religions and "religious" texts.

Theology can be confusing and contradictory. If God's omnipotence and omnibenevolence can be reconciled with the existence of evil, it kinds makes you wonder what's going on in God's head. Even if it doesn't make sense, it makes a great premise for a fantasy-adventure novel!!

In The Valley of Fire the different aspects of the mind of God (God's wrath, God's genius, etc.) travel through space and time to recapture God's Insanity -- who escaped while helping Jesus and Contradiction help people understand God's mysteries. Why can't the other components of God's mind recapture His insanity? Well -- since it's narrated by God's Contradiction -- the rules of this fictional universe are excused from having to be consistent or coherent. And it works. Our heroes battle angels of fire, have a dangerous run-in with the seal holding back the horsemen of the Apocalypse, and even enlist the aid of Porter Rockwell before discovering that Insanity was running his own polygamist sect. It's easily a more interesting solution than simply sending God to a shrink and prescribing Him some lithium.

Brett Cottrell's The Valley of Fire is an enjoyable and entertaining read. If you like action and fantasy -- with perhaps a dash of speculative Theology -- pick this one up!!
A witty and intellectual play on words and historical content keeps the story alive as the characters depicting the recesses of God's mind try to contain Insanity let lose on Earth.

Get it, read it and enjoy the journey! I did. )
This book was very well written! I had a very hard time putting the book down. The author did a wonderful job, especially with the dialog. It was a highly enjoyable read, and I would highly recommend this book to everyone!
I thouroughly enjoyed this book - it is witty, dealing lightly and humorously with some serious, deep issues of existence, religion, and morality. The style and content reminded me of 2 of my favorite books - Christopher Moore's Lamb and Pratchett and Gaiman's Good Omens, as well as Kevin Smith's Dogma. The ending seems to hint at a sequel - I hope so and can't wait to read it!
It is a rarity to see such an original concept in today's writings. Combine an original plot idea with interesting characters, a unique writing style and a feverish pace, and you have a story that doesn't drown in its heavier philosophical moments and revels in its action pieces and intelligent dialogue.

If you are a fan of Good Omens, Christopher Moore, or Tom Robbins, I encourage you to read this book. If you aren't a fan of those authors and that book, well, pick this up anyway. It's a good read by a new author with some original ideas. Stop reading and click on "Buy!"
