Having always enjoyed reading Barbara Michaels publications, I was sadly disappointed with this particular book. There were several elements of the story that were not completely explained or just seemed not to fit. The 'wondering' lady about town is just one of those elements which seems to be mentioned and then forgotten about. The psychiatrist, while a relevant character initially, seems to be a 'forced into the story fixture' as this tale progresses to the climax. Actually, it was quite difficult to believe she was even a psychiatrist given her actions and unethical tolerations. Both sisters were unlikable and so was the husband. The only character I did seem to care about was the local M.D. However, I realize that many reviewers did enjoy this story and I really wanted to myself. Despite being greatly disappointed with this book, I remain an ardent Barbara Michaels fan. I do recommend The Dancing Floor, Ammie Come Home, The Master of Blacktower, Into the Darkness, Vanish with the Rose, and Houses of Stone

I'll have to admit out of all Barbara Micheals' books that I have read so this one is the most chilling/scary one I have ever read. When you start reading it. It seems a bit slow at first but gets better because you can almost feel that erie coldness and chill down your spine. It a while to walk off the feeling of uneasiness after reading the book even after I read a second time. I recommend this book to all fans of Barbara Micheals and those that love books that send chills to your bones.
This is definitely one of the better Barbara Michaels books I've read. It was close to being 4.5 stars. The mystery was interesting, and the book actually creeped me out, which doesn't happen a lot with horror novels for me. I did feel like the epilogue didn't totally fit with the rest of the story - it was an abrupt transition - but that was my only real complaint.
I purchased this book as a replacement for my copy which is falling apart. It is a great read! Of course, to me, anything from Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters is terrific. (Try WITCH if you haven't already.) While Elizabeth is pretty light-hearted, Barbara is more spine tingling.
We lost a great author when she passed.
I've read most of Barbara Michael's books. It's clear to me when I first started reading it that it was an earlier book because it's not as well written. However the story was entertaining and follows the same pattern that most of her books do, which seems to grasp our attention well.
Glad to see Barbara Michaels stories on . The Crying Child has just the right elements - a bereaved mother who is trying to recover, a haunting and suspense makes this one of my favorites.
If you want a very good quality page turning well paced twisty mystery complete with well researched historical events. Realistic characters that you will meet and come to know as friends ;who band together to solve a truly frightening unusual puzzle about a scary haunted house and the ghosts who haunt it and why, with a very thoroughly developed back story- Then this is the book for you! It,s 5 star excellence in writing by Barbra Michaels. An example of quality writing, a well developed plot, 3 dimentional characters that connect with you emotionally , the challenge of solving an intricate twisty mystery that sucks you into solving the puzzle, no unwanted porn to skip over , No obscene unnecessary verbiage, a PG rating for some swearing, and 5 stars for excellence!
