I didn't mark this book as space opera, because it takes place almost entirely on Barrayar, and explores Barrayaran politics in significantly more depth than do the preceding books. I am not especially good at keeping track of political intricacies, but Bujold managed to carry me along without losing me in any of the convolutions. We also get further character development of some key characters, the right amount of suspense, and perhaps the best apology letter I've ever read in any setting.

A few secondary characters were a bit close to social stereotypes, but unfortunately, not unrealistic.

I had read this before but forgotten how incredibly funny it was. I love the Mile Vorkosegan series and have read every one I can get my hands on. Since we read them mostly as library books we are now collecting them on to be easily re-read. My favorite scene in this book is Miles's dinner party where everything goes wrong. Enrique's misguided attempt to impress Miles with a butter bug bearing the Vorkosegan crest was so believable! We've all known nerdy, scholarly types like Enrique. As an insect lover from childhood I could relate to his love of bugs that must look like large cockroaches. I would love to see this book made into a movie, though it does come right in the middle of the Vorkosegan saga.

Beside seeing Miles struggle to figure out how to romance Ekatarin, the book also has some very exciting parts where we fear Nicky will be kidnapped or Miles charged with murder. Amazingly, all the tangled threads are tied together in an outrageous but satisfying conclusion.
A Civil Campaign is basically A Comedy of Errors set in the Vorkorsigan universe. This book follows Miles through as he bumbles through an awkward courtship of Ekaterian and the usual cast of characters abound. Bujold plays to her strenghts here in various fashions. The book has more absurdist English wit then previous entries and is laugh out funny in many points. Bujold's charactarization shines as she makes Ekatarian a strong female character who can almost hold her own in a large role opposite the amazing Miles. Even though this is like the 9th entry into the series, Bujold finds ways to keep Miles interesting and develop his character. Finally, even though the ending is inevitable, Bujold still manages to build some level of suspense and anxiety to the outcome.

Like other books in the series, Bujold has something to say about physical limitations, the importance of the mind, and the power of charsima. Perhaps this is why she has been so popular with sci-fi dorks around the world. Also like other books in this series, you need to start at the beginning as one could never understand all the nuances, inside jokes and refrences found within this book.

I agree with another reviewer regarding the cover. It is probably a gross inaccuracy of Miles physical description although if one is willing to suspend logical thought, they might that argue that the cover models are just random dancers and not the primary characters. Regardless, one should never judge a book by its cover.

This book was nominated for the Hugo in 2000 and the Nebula in 2001 in what was an exceptionally stong year. In retrospect this book can't really compare in scope or originality to Vinge's Hugo win for A Deepness In the Sky, (also nominated for Nebula) but the two books are so different that its like comparing apples and oranges. Other Hugo nominees from that year also included Darwin's Radio (Nebula winner), Cryptnomicon and Harry Potter III...all "heavy hitters".

Bottom Line A fine late entry into a series. Readers who have made it this far probably won't stop here.
For those of you familiar with the books of author Bujold there is no one like her. A series of books containg her protagonist Miles, have been purportedly space opera in genre although as Miles has grown his book structure has morphed and stretched to contain other book forms.
Here we have Jane Austen meets Steven Weber with a dash of political thriller for seasoning. Miles an adventurer who is growing up, desires to court a woman, recently widowed. However he might have forgotten to tell the widow of his intentions as she is marriage shy, the survivor of a disaster of a husband.
Enter rival bachelors, The lothoreo Ivan cousin to Miles, and a plot to incapacitate Miles politically as he assumes his place in his culturally powerful family on planet. Add in the return of the clone brother of Miles with a hord of genetically engineered bugs, the start of a new business venture. Enter friends, relatives, and various current and past employees. Stir with a plot to frame Miles for murder and we have Miles going courting.
For those of us who know and love Ms. Bujold and her writting this is part of the unique maturation of her protagonist Miles and makes perfect sense. If you are not as familiar the blend of comedy of manners and science fiction may be unique. This author is always worthwhile, however this book will make even more sense if you begin one book back with Komarr.
This is a unique offering from a unique author with brains and heart all her own. All though all her book are written as stand alone novels, I might recommend starting one book back as I mentioned earlier. Or give yourself a real treat and read them all.
I am gleefully enjoying the entire Vorkosigan Saga. Bujold is an excellent writer of multiple genres. That being said, I enjoyed the other 11 books of this series better. This one was just somehow not as up to snuff as the others - yet it was a way to get Miles from one stage of life to the next. I'll certainly read the rest, and you do need each book (read in chronological starting with his parents then up through, not published order! - author provides the best order in the notes at the back of the book) to know where you are picking up the story. This isn't a bad book, just a bit more comic and rom-com than the others, which are far more drama oriented, yet maintain an excellent sense of Miles wicked humor and self-deprecation. I'm digging into book 13 currently and it is great.
