2.5 I'm torn StarsWell, i really thought this one was going to be a super hot rock star book. But no, there were some parts of this book that i liked and that is the only reason why i'm giving it 2.5 stars.
Beryl is an organizer, and ultra-responsible? No, not in my book. If you are hired to organize someone's house, you don't read their journals, or keep the things they discard and use them in front of them! There were so many things like this that didn't sit well with me and i just couldn't relate to Beryl, at all!

Tattoo Thief Heidi Joy Tretheway 9781490541327 Books Reviews
I regularly dive into the Top 100 Free Books on because I'm a total, unrepentant reading addict with no desire to be cured. For the most part, they're not bad (though a few are terrible,) and sometimes I get lucky and find a new favorite.
When I read the description of "Tattoo Thief" I figured it would be a pretty fun, if predictable read. I expected something light and fairytale like "girl moves to the Big City where she and a Rock Star (improbably) fall in love. And probably steamy scenes happen. The End! Ta-da!"
Boy, was I surprised!
Sure, the girl (Beryl), does indeed move to the Big City (New York), and she and a Rock Star (Gavin) do fall in love... but it doesn't really feel improbable. And it wasn't as light and fluffy as I expected, either. Beryl is a really interesting character. She's very cautious by nature, which is something I understand very well, but she's taking a chance for the first time. She's also perceptive and caring, but definitely not a pushover. She's more than OK dishing out a helping of Truth when it's needed. Even though she thinks that her tendency to speak without thinking first is a huge flaw, she challenges people when they need it, while at the same time saying what she really means. The people she's dealing with in her new life don't tend to get that very often.
Gavin was an interesting enigma for a large part of the book, since he and Beryl communicate via texts, emails and instant messages. It works much better, I think, than if the author had written him being in the apartment the whole time. The distance gives the cautious Beryl time to figure him out, and build curiosity for the reader. Why in the world would a super star like Gavin trash his place, abandon his dog, and disappear off the face of the earth?
The whole book is an interesting way to retell an old story no matter how much success, money, or other "riches" someone has, it can hide a very broken, miserable person. Under all that glitter, designer labels, and generations of money, there's a person, just like you and I. The more people Beryl meets in her new life, the more she comes to realize this herself.
On one hand, I would have liked to have some of Gavin's point of view, because I would have liked to see more of his transformation before coming home. On the other hand, switching to his POV and back would have radically changed the feel of the story, and there's no way I'd want to do that.
I really, really loved this book. All the characters have interesting depths and relationships, and I liked the way it wrapped up. (I also have to say that I loved that the band is originally from Pittsburgh. I freely admit my bias.) The text/email/IM conversations between Gavin and Beryl had me chuckling out loud more than once. They're just so cute!
Tattoo Thief read very much like a "Sweet" romance to me, with a little "Steam" thrown in as a pleasant accent. It's not racy Erotica, but do be aware that there's sex in this book. If you don't mind sex scenes, and you like a sweet romance with a bit more introspection than most, you're going to love this.
When I started reading the beginning of this book, I didn't expect to love this book so much. I mean, from what I've heard and read from reviewers, the male lead, Gavin, isn't present for over 60% of the book. I didn't think much chemistry or attraction could develop between the two main characters. Want to know something crazy? The main characters, Gavin and Beryl, had more chemistry then characters I've read about that met on the first page and said I love you three chapters from then.
Seriously, I fell in love with Gavin myself just from the emails, chat messages, and the videos Beryl watched on the computer. I love how we couldn't see him, yet, we knew him and got to learn so much about him. And that's why this book is my favorite book of the year. The author did something I've never read or experienced before. She made the main character likable and made me fall in love with his character, without us even meeting him! And unlike most rock-stars you read about, Gavin isn't a complete a**hole. He's damaged and made mistakes, but at least he could admit them, own them, and grow from the experience.
Beryl is a twenty-two year old woman whom's looking for an adventure. Having to grow up fast to take care of her mother, who didn't deal with the death of her father well, Beryl missed out on a lot of teenage experiences. But when her father's best friend re-enters her life and offers her a job in New York, she jumps at the chance to change her life and seek the adventure she has been craving.
Instead of being an assistant to her sort of uncle, he offers her a job as a house sitter for the rich and famous. Not having anywhere else to stay, since her roommate situation fell through, she accepts the offer, not thinking it would be too difficult--until she saw the famous rock-star, Gavin's, penthouse thrashed. For some unknown reason, Gavin, who is the lead singer of the band Tattoo Thief, left his penthouse in a mess, abandoned his dog, and left the country. What happened to him that made him abandon his life and flee?
Beryl, angry and feeling the need to give the rock-star a kick to the arse, emails him, requesting to know what to do with his penthouse and inquiring why he left so suddenly, leaving all his responsibilities behind. She expected an answer, what she didn't expect was to fall in love with the man, whom she never met. Little does she know Gavin is looking for a reason to come back, some light in his life that's currently surrounded by darkness, and she just might be what the doctor prescribed.
Will Beryl uncover why he left New York so suddenly? Was Gavin responsible for his old muses death? And do they have a future together that doesn't include eternal darkness and self-loathing.
I usually end my review with a few of my thoughts about the book as a whole, but thoughts are eluding me. I'm just so overwhelmed with emotions from this book and I honestly feel lucky I found this book. Not many books make me speechless, or keep me thinking, but this book...all I can say is it was mind-blowing! Seriously, don't walk, RUN, and get this book. I personally can't wait to read the next book, it's about Beryl's best friend and one of Gavin's band-mates.
Oh! Another great thing about this book is that it's a standalone! So no cliffhangers with you dying to get the next book. Okay, that isn't completely true. Yes, there's no cliffhangers, but you are going to want to read the next book about Stella and Tyler!
I highly, highly, recommend this book to everyone!
My favorite quotes
"I'm the ghost, the house-elf, the dog-walker, delivery-receiver, fridge-stocker, unseen errand-girl who keeps everything running until they come home."
"Be safe, but have an adventure."
"I do love you, Gavin, I fell for you and I care about you and I'm crazy about you and I love you."
"Do you know what Queen Elizabeth wrote after 9/11? 'Grief is the price we pay for love."
"Physics. Newton's third law says, 'for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.' And that's what I'm looking for. My opposite, and my equal."
I had a hard time with this story... the passion factor is WAY down and it takes forever for us to meet the love interest. Not sure I like that. Also, I kinda cringed at the mother love interest...just cause I felt like it wasn't needed and made a long story, longer. Some spoilage rants... um I get that the clothes were nice but when you found out they were a former lovers who DIED maybe you should've rechecked with the guy before wearing them...especially around him! I mean I wouldn't be cool with that AT ALL!!!! Next, dude I get mourning your gf but you do NOT get to just leave your dog!!! If you can't take care of it, find someone who can but either way? NOT COOL. Lastly if my bestie pulled that crap I wouldn't have let her get away with that...no matter what my irresponsible, flakey, and emotionally challenged boyfriend said. That will not fly. I will keep the book but will I reread it or buy the next one? Dunno. Standalone and concluded this couple... I really wouldn't call it a HEA bc I felt like it just kinda, ended. But it wasn't bad. I did like the Eugene, NYC locals bc I've lived in both places so I was like...I know exactly what you mean!!! But I'd cut the book in half if I was the authors editor. Too much info!...like I wrote.
