Psycho USA Famous American Killers You Never Heard Of Harold Schechter 9780345524478 Books

This book was about the most twisted true crime book I have read in a long time. I didn't realize there were so many psychos back in the 19th century, but after reading this book, there were more than I ever expected to be living in those days. The author, Harold Schechter, delved long and deep into the past to find these crazy murderers.

All these murderers were people I have never heard of before and it didn't matter if it was a man or a woman as both were the most cold hearted individuals to walk this earth. In my opinion, the men in this book that committed the crimes back in the 1800's were worse than the famous killers that we know of today. We thought that Bundy, Dahmer, and Gacy were twisted, but after reading this book, there were worse killers than them back in the "old days".

The women were just as bad and it seems that the women loved to use arsenic and any kind of poison they could get their hands on to commit their crimes. The men loved to use axes and hatchets to "chop" up their victims.

This book is not for the faint of heart as the author goes into descriptive detail about the murders and it was one of the most detailed versions of murders that I have read in a very long time. I found myself through some of the stories getting queasy as the information of the murders were so detailed that I could imagine the pain and agony of the victims. That is saying a lot for me as I consider myself a hardened horror fan and normally I don't get queasy reading about twisted psychos! But with this book it was a different. This is no "walk in the park" book. It is a "ride into hell". Four stars for this one.

Psycho USA Famous American Killers You Never Heard Of Harold Schechter 9780345524478 Books Reviews

This book was ok. covers a wide range of criminals over a wide time span. it isn't written as well as some of the other true crime books I have read but it was still enjoyable but not one I will read multiple times.
Interesting book. Most were few pages long about historical murders. Would have liked a bit more information on some but overall good, well written book. I was only familiar with the “mad sculptor” and there is a book about the case which is very good also.
Harold Schechter is a fantastic storyteller. His books are absolutely captivating. I highly recommend his books to any seasoned deathling, these aren't just the same old stories they are already familiar with. Mr. Shechter is so a wonderful researcher murders that I did know about he brought a new light to.
As an avid reader of serial/ famous killers this one was just tough to get through. Idk if it's the fact that almost all the stories take place before the 1900s or what. I debated several times on wither to just put it down and give up. Though I hadn't heard any of these stories before, and it was written well (hence the 3 starts) I will not be rereading and kinda wish I had saved my money for something better.
I absolutely loved this book. It was very well researched and well written. It was obviously well thought out. There are no usage errors. I enjoyed the trip through the history of sensational murders throughout out nation's growth. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys history and murder. It is well worth whatever it's current cost may be.
I liked it. Very interesting to see the comparison between the same type of serial killers of the 1800's and the ones that are infamous for the same crimes. I will diffidently buy another book of his era of crime.
Even more so than the last one I reviewed, this crime book goes into excellent detail re a bunch of murders regarded as absolutely heinous at the time they were committed, which generated outrageous amounts of publicity and appalling mob-mentality behavior in their day, yet are now known only by truly dedicated true crime enthusiasts. I thought I knew almost all the big cases; well, I was wrong.
