I bought this book when it was on sale from book bub (at least I think I did). So for the (free-1.99 I paid) the book was worth it. (I see the book is now selling for 9.99. If I had paid that I would have been upset.) The story is told in present day and flash back of 100 years or so. By far the flash backs are the most interesting parts of the story. I would have liked much more of that. (The characters could have been developed even more) The present day is fairly predictable and not developed very well, something you have to get through to get back to the interesting stuff. As you can see I can it 4 stars so it is worth the read if you can pick it up on special. But don't pay the ridiculous price of 9.99.Tags : The Resurrectionist: A Novel [Matthew Guinn] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. A young doctor wrestles with the legacy of a slave “resurrectionist” owned by his South Carolina medical school. Dog days and the fresh bodies are arriving once again. Very readable. I found it a compelling story and learned some strange history from it. Had never considered the idea that grave robbing was commonplace for teaching medical students anatomy in the 1800s. The most satisfying turn in the book (SEMI-SPOILER ALERT) was the "Resurrectionist's" (e.g., graverobber's) wonderfully imaginative revenge on the student who was so unmerciful towards him.
The Resurrection may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I found it to be an intriguing, beautifully written story, alternating from the past to the distant present. It deals with a dark side of medical history, the purloining of the corpses of slaves and impoverished African Americans for medical research. Although some have pointed out errors, Matthew Guinn was able to blend his research into a riveting tale.
I live in Augusta, GA, the city where the medical college exists on which this story is based. Save a couple of nit-picky antebellum/Civil War errors, this is an excellent read and treats the deplorable racism of southern medical research quite well.
I lived in Augusta, Ga a few blocks from the Old Medical School, when the events that inspired this book occurred. While the discovery didn't cause the furor at MCG that it did in the novel, it did leave many of us wondering about how the cadavers were procured. The book flips back and forth between the past and present (the past being of greater interest to me) and is well written. The story woven about the Resurrectionist was wonderfully crafted. A great book, even if you donot have a connection to the real events.
I really enjoyed this book, it provided an insight into the southern culture at the turn of the century. I had not known about the early medical practices at that time. I guess now I know why my grandparents never trusted doctors, since they were born around 1909 and probably heard from their parents growing up not to trust them. I found myself rushing to read through the current story to get to the story from the past. I can't say that I really liked the ending of the current story. I thought that could have been better written. All in all it was a very good read - something I ruushed to get on the bus/train to pull out of my briefcase every night on my way to/from work.
This was a very interesting book! Part history, part mystery and, I believe, it addresses a part of slavery that we haven't read much about. I literally couldn't stop reading once I got started. I will give one caveat....if you have a weak stomach, you may want to pass on this one. The parts about medical dissection in the mid-1800's are highly accurate and told in great detail. I found it interesting without being gruesome because the author has clearly done the research and the details were not for shock value - they were simply the truth. Just keep it in mind before you dig into this one.
Wow. I couldn't put this book down. I was interested to see what happened next and turn the page. I am sure this book is based on things that truly happened. I felt the author did a great job of moving between past and present. I was happy for both Nemo and Jacob. I think everyone found the life they should have had in the end. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and I was a bit sad when I finished.
